Andreia Garcia (Guimarães, 1985) is an architect, curator and professor in the fields of architecture and the city.
Her PhD in Architecture from the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon (FAUL, 2015) was awarded the Professor Manuel Tainha Prize for the best PhD thesis in Architecture in 2014/2015 by FAUL, and was subsequently published in a book entitled “Scenic Space, Architecture and City” in 2016.
She was curator of several exhibitions such as: Smaller Cities (Guimarães European Capital of Culture, 2012), Projecto Memória (Centenary of Theatro Circo de Braga, 2015), Shaping Shape (Architecture Programme of the Maia Contemporary Art Biennale, 2017), Rythm of Distances: Propositions for the Repetion (Galeria Vertical, 2017), João Álvaro Rocha (MAM, 2018), Endless Space: Propositions for the Continuous (Galeria Vertical, 2017), Fast Forward (MAM, 2019), Double Exposure (Roca Gallery, 2019), Bienal de Arte Contemporânea da Maia (2019), Contemporâneos Extemporâneos (Galeria Fernando Santos, 2021), Anuário (Porto, 2020). She conceived and directs the Art(e)Facts Knowledge Biennial in Fundão. She is co-founder of the Architecture Gallery, in Porto, an independent space dedicated to reflection and debate on Architecture, City and Territory in Porto.
As an architect her work has been selected for the FAD Awards (2018, 2019 and 2020); Dezeen Awards (2019); BigMAT Award (2019); HAUSER Award (2020); Mies van der Rohe (2022).
She has been invited to teach at: Polytechnic University of Madrid (ETSAM) and University of Valladolid (UVa), (Spain) São Paulo (Brazil), Vilnius Academy of Arts (Lithuania), Amman School of Architecture (Jordan). She has been a guest lecturer at the School of Architecture of the University of Minho (UM), and at the Architectural Association (AA), in London.
She is Assistant Professor at the University of Beira Interior (UBI), and since 2021 vice-President of the Faculty of Engineering.
Andreia Garcia is the curator of the Portuguese Official Representation at the 18th International Architecture Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia 2023 – Fertile Futures. While discussing and proposing strategies for the management, protection and transformation of freshwater and contributing to a debate that is common and global, Fertile Futures focuses on the scarcity and management of this resource, in the Portuguese territory. A proposal that commissions young architects, in collaboration with specialists from other fields of knowledge, to present propositional models for a more sustainable, healthy and equitable tomorrow, in non-hierarchical cooperation between disciplines, generations and species, defending the pertinence of Architecture’s contribution to the redesign of a decarbonised, decolonised and collaborative tomorrow, in direct response to the invitation by Lesley Lokko.
