The proposal presented here aims to create a platform that shares knowledge about food and ecology through transdisciplinary perspectives and collaborative practices.
As a researcher in the disciplinary field of architecture, Andreia Garcia is often confronted with the importance of the notion of the ecological, as something that starts from nature and makes it what is essential, universal and subsistent. The problem is that
animal life is a much wider universe, derived from many factors, such as what we ingest, the energy we process, technology, everything we do that confronts us with a general distribution crisis.
So right now we are facing, or being forced to face, a moral question: in light of all the problems we face, what should we do?
We look to popular culture which is replete with images of environmental apocalypse. Images of climate dystopia saturate contemporary media. From a superficial point of view, these images share a common certainty: humanity’s technological hubris produces dramatic environmental change.
There are two very different visions of the future that encompass divergent constellations
divergent constellations of societal hopes and fears. This divergence has implications for how design and planning work to mediate
the present and the imagined future. One recounts scenarios of water scarcity, and the other, of a submerged world. The dry apocalypse versus the wet apocalypse. We are defined by diversity and the ability to modify our capacities. In other words, if on the one hand we live in this radical instability, on the other, this is the basis of the impact of our wrong habits.
It is on this assumption that this programme is designed, seeking the path that comes from the earth and involves the community at the table. This is a proposal that perpetuates our food identity in a balance between yesterday’s place and tomorrow’s place.
This proposal emerges from the place. In this old market, where once our memories were in buying food, today exploration is the mirage
and the thematic opportunity to which the empty place makes room. In the form of a moment, a performative word and a research show, sensorial reflections are promised, both of the processes of cultivation and consumption.
